Cleanup Methods: A variety of mold cleanup methods are available for remediation damage to building materials and furnishings caused by moisture control problems and mold growth.  The specific method(s) are determined by what materials are affected.

Some possible methods: Wet Vacuum, Damp Wipes, HEPA Vacuum, Discard, Containment(s)

Depending on the job, containment will be set up during remediation.

Wet Vacuums: designed to collect water where water has accumulated.

Damp Wipe: Mold can be generally removed from nonporous (hard) surfaces by wiping or scrubbing with water, or water and detergent.  It is important to dry these surfaces immediately and thoroughly to discourage further mold growth.  Porous materials that are wet and have mold on them have to be discarded; the mold can be difficult or impossible to remove completely.

HEPA Vacuum: HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) vacuums are recommended for final cleanup of remediation areas.  HEPA Vacuums are used for cleanup of dust that may have settled on surfaces outside the remediation area as well. We also use machines called air scrubbers to collect the air born particulate and these machines are HEPA filtered as well.

Discard: Removing damaged materials and sealing in plastic bags, this can usually be discarded in ordinary construction waste.  It is important to remove the mold contaminated materials in sealed bags before exiting from the contaminated area to minimize the dispersion of mold spores throughout the property.

Once the issue causing contamination has been resolved and the remediation of the contaminated area has been completed, Then a qualified tester will go in and take air samples those samples will be sent to a licensed laboratory to ensure the property is clean and free of all contaminate once they pass the reconstruction or replacement can begin!

Water Extraction & What we do:

Every Job is different, but these are steps taken to remediate the issue at Hand:

  • Trained Technicians come in and extract the water.
  • If necessary, they will remove carpet and padding if deemed necessary they will then clean, dry, and reinstall carpet and padding based on IICRC Standards. 
  • Provide professional grade equipment for a controlled drying process of your home and its contents-preventing secondary damage and potential microbial growth.
  • They will also need to place all furniture and personal items off of the floor and on Styrofoam blocks or remove it from the area completely.
  • They will test your walls for moisture content, from there it depends on what the technician finds.

  • Technicians will monitor the dehumidification/drying process.
Types and Source of Water Loss:
Water losses fall into one of three categories

Category 1: Clean Water
  • This water originates from a source not posting substantial harm to humans.
  • May include broken water supply lines, sink overflows with no containments, appliance malfunctions involving water supply lines, melting snow, falling rain water, broken toilet tanks, and toilet bowls that contain contaminants or additives.
  • If left untreated for 72 hours, category 1 becomes category 2 water.                            

Category 2: Grey Water

 

  • This water contains a significant level of contamination & has potential to cause discomfort or sickness if consumed by or exposed to humans. 
  • Category 2 water carries microorganisms and nutrients for microorganisms.  Its sources may include discharge or overflows from dishwashers, washing machines, or toilet bowls (with some urine, but no feces), sump pump failures, seepage due to hydrostatic pressure, and broken aquariums.
  • Gray water may contain chemicals, bio-contaminants, and other forms of contamination including physical hazards and is unsuitable for consumption.
  • Carpet: When affected with category 2 water, carpet cushion must be removed and properly disposed of.  Carpet that is saved must be cleaned with hot water extraction.
  • If left untreated, Category 2 Water becomes Category 3 Water in 48 hours or less.

Category 3: Black Water
  • This includes sewage and other contaminated water sources entering or affecting the indoor environment.
  • Sources may be toilet backflows that originate from beyond the toilet trap, ground surface water, and rising water from rivers and streams-these waters carry silt and organic matter into structures and create black water conditions.
  • The health of workers & occupants is the most important consideration when dealing with sewage & back flows.
  • Carpet: Always remove and properly dispose of both carpet and padding affected by a Category 3 water loss.

Special Situations:  Regulated materials pose potential or recognized health risks and may include but are not limited to:
  • Arsenic
  • asbestos
  • fuels
  • mercury
  • solvents
  • lead
  • caustic chemicals
  • Radiological residues
  • polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)   

Things you can do to minimize damage until our crew arrives:

FIRST MOST IMPORTANT: Make sure to avoid any chance of electric shock!  Electricity & Water Don’t Mix.

Emergency Check List for Water Damage.

 

  1. As quick as possible, eliminate the source
  2. Don't use any electrical devices around the wet areas.
  3. To minimize damage, don't walk on wet carpet more then you have to.
  4. Remove small furnishings from carpet, or place them up from the floor so you flooring and furniture don't touch, preventing rust, furniture stains, wood swelling, which can become permanent.
  5. Pin up or hang up draperies and furniture skirts to avoid contact with the wet floors.
  6. Remove breakables, moisture sensitive items & high value items, books, shoes, paper goods, fabrics, potted plants & any other items that may stain floor coverings.
  7. Plan for restoration crews to move furniture to unaffected dry areas.
  8. Make sure to practice good hygiene after handling any affected items.
  9. Make sure to avoid any chance of electric shock, don't use a home vacuum or shop vac to remove water.
  10. If sewage related, don't handle any contaminated items and do not turn on fans, heating, or air conditioning units as they may spread to other areas.
